The Implementation of the dynamics analysis spectrometer DNA; The Pedigree of the backscattering neutron spectrometer

Shibata, Kaoru

Hamon, 28(1), p.26 - 28, 2018/02

We briefly introduce the pedigree of the backscattering neutron spectrometer and the specification of DNA; a time-of-flight (TOF) type near-backscattering spectrometer (n-BSS), with Si crystal analyzers which was constructed at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC).

Renewal of centralized radioactivity measurement system for radiation control

Kawasaki, Katsuya; Mochizuki, Kaoru*; Suzuki, Takehiko; Kinouchi, Nobuyuki

JAERI-Tech 2004-070, 50 Pages, 2004/12

JAERI-Tech-2004-070.pdf:18.19MB

The centralized radioactivity measurement system has been used to carry out intensively measurements of a large number and variety of samples that are necessary for the control of radioactivity in the facilities of the JAERI Tokai Establishment and its environment. The operation of the system started in 1981, and presently the system processes more than 20,000 samples a year. However, the computers of the system have aged so much that the manufacturer's support and stable operation are no longer sure. Therefore, we renewed and restructured the computer system in 2003. A client-server system was adopted in the new system. The information of samples can be registered through the intranet. The clients can also confirm the progress of processing of their samples and browse the analytical results from their own computers. The renewed system can provide some convenience functions to the clients.

Various characterization were used to study the effect of heavy ion irradiation on a poly(ethylen terephthalate)(PET) membrane. My study was followed using some dynamic and thermal measurements with the aim to undestand the chemical change in the material by heavy ion irradiation. The anyalyese included DMA, tensile measurement, DSC and micro-FT-IR. The overall structure change in the PET polymer was investigated as a function of the Xe ion fluence in the range from 3$$times$$10$$^{3}$$ to 3$$times$$10$$^{9}$$ions/cm$$^{2}$$. Based on some mechanical measurements such as the tensile analysis and dynamic test, the heavy ion irradiated PET membranes exhibited a significant change in cross-linking. I believe that the secondary electron induced by collision between the irradiated ion and the constituent atoms of the membrane material form the cross-linking. The polymer chain scission and structure degradations are expected to result at higher ion fluence. Also, a slight change in the structure such as amorphization has been shown by DSC and the micro-FT-IR test.

High-energy charge-exchange diagnostics can determine the distribution function of fast atoms produced via the neutralization of hydrogen ions by hydrogen-like impurity ions. Deriving the distribution function requires to know the composition and spatial distribution of the target ions in a plasma. A charge-exchange target forms as a result of the interaction between impurity nuclei and beam atoms. Depending on the arrangement of heating beams with respect to the diagnostics, it is necessary to calculate their trajectories. A model which takes into account elementary processes resulting in the ionization equilibrium of the ions of impurities in a specific tokamak configuration is proposed. The model is applied to the JT-60U plasma. Mechanisms for the formation of charge-exchange atomic flows are considered. The relative contributions of different heating injectors to the charge-exchange flow are estimated. Based on the calculated results, a method is proposed for local measurements of the ion distribution function with a stationary analyzer.

High efficiency indirect geometory crystal analyzer TOF spectrometer; DYANA dedicated to biology, planning in JSNS

Shibata, Kaoru; Tamura, Itaru; Soyama, Kazuhiko; Arai, Masatoshi; Middendorf, H. D.*; Niimura, Nobuo

Proceedings of ICANS-XVI, Volume 1, p.351 - 354, 2003/07

In this research report we describe the design of DYANA, a new neutron spectrometer dedicated for biology, biomaterials, and related soft-matter studies, which will be installed in the material and life science experimental facility project at the JAERI Tokai establishment. The DYANA spectrometer is an indirect-geometry crystal-analyzer instrument and its energy and momentum transfer range are from several 10$$mu$$eV to several meV and from 0.1$$AA ^{-1}$$ to several $$AA ^{-1}$$ , respectively. These specifications will become possible to do the study of protein dynamics analysis.
